And you would be right, on paper. <\/p>\n<p>To stanch the rhetorical bleeding:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"quo\">The federal Liberal government says it will lower the small business tax rate to 10 per cent in January and to nine per cent in 2019, the start of a week-long effort to <span class=\"highlighter\">stanch<\/span> the bleeding from a self-inflicted political wound. &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cp24.com\/news\/liberals-to-lower-small-business-tax-rate-to-9-per-cent-in-2019-1.3633685\">The Canadian Press<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>To stanch a meltdown:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"quo\">Dudley was a principal player in Fed decisions concerning the demise of Lehman Brothers, AIG and Bear Stearns, along with emergency measures taken by the central bank to <span class=\"highlighter\">stanch<\/span> a meltdown in the financial system. &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2017\/11\/04\/new-york-fed-president-william-dudley-set-to-announce-retirement-sources.html\">CNBC<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A staunch feminist disappointing her friends:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"quo\">Friends who described Hofmeister as a <span class=\"highlighter\">staunch<\/span> feminist, generous friend and promoter of young professional women, say they are disappointed that she has become the public \u201capologist\u201d for Weinstein. &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2017\/11\/11\/meet-harvey-weinsteins-new-publicist\/\">PageSix<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>There are clear differences in meaning. We run into a problem when it comes to pronunciation. It may not be self-evident, but <span class=\"highlighter\">stanch<\/span> and <span class=\"highlighter\">staunch<\/span> are the same word. We need to hit the dictionaries for this one. We found the following on this excellent page in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.collinsdictionary.com\/us\/dictionary\/english\/stanch\">Collins English Dictionary<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"prono\">Stanch<\/span><code> in American English<\/code><br \/>\n<code>(st\u0251nt\u0283; st\u00e4nch; st\u00e6nt\u0283; stanch; st\u0254nt\u0283; st\u00f4nch)<\/code><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"prono\">Stanch<\/span><code> in British English<\/code><br \/>\n<code>(st\u0251\u02d0nt\u0283) or staunch (st\u0254\u02d0nt\u0283)<\/code><\/p>\n<p>As you can see by the intimidating vocal spellings, eight (8) different pronunciations of <span class=\"highlighter\">stanch<\/span> are offered; five of these are accompanied by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.collinsdictionary.com\/us\/dictionary\/english\/stanch\">brief audible recordings<\/a>. Some of them sound like <span class=\"highlighter\">staunch<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"prono\">Staunch<\/span><br \/>\n<code>(st\u022fnch; st\u00e4nch)<\/code> <\/p>\n<p>Make that nine (9) possible pronunciations.<\/p>\n<p>. . .<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"highlighter\">Stanch<\/span> made it as the word of the day in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/stanch\">Merriam-Webster<\/a> on 10\/07\/2009.
