One adverb in particular, &#8216;<span class=\"highlighter\">increasingly<\/span>&#8216;, gives the writer up as lazy. But for some reason, &#8216;increasingly&#8217; crept into the lexicon two or three decades ago, used by newspaper reporters as an easy way to reference a trend, even if the trend had just developed over the past few hours instead of, say, months or years.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"quo\">Most of the aides who had been wandering around the convention center had found refuge backstage, away from the crowds staring at big screens hoping for a victory. \u201cThe path kept narrowing and narrowing and narrowing until there wasn\u2019t one,\u201d Parkhomenko recalled. \u201cThe mood behind the stage became <span class=\"highlighter\">increasingly<\/span> grim.\u201d &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/359293-adam-parkhomenko-the-mood-behind-the-stage-became-increasingly-grim\">The Hill<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The following trend &#8216;increased&#8217; over years, until it was &#8216;resounding&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"quo\"><span class=\"highlighter\">Increasingly<\/span>, leading cities are hiring \u201cdata people.\u201d Whether with the title chief data officer, chief innovation officer, performance stat program director, or data scientist, these individuals are looking at government in a new way and using data to increase efficiency. Are these hires worth the investment? <span class=\"highlighter\">Resoundingly<\/span>, the answer is yes. &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.govtech.com\/data\/Data-Experts-are-an-Increasingly-Popular-Hire-for-Governments.html\">GovTech<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>But why is gradualism so revered by the writer? It is not how the world works. And it might stand in the way of clarity: does she mean that each city is hiring more &#8216;data people&#8217;? Or that more cities are doing the hiring?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"reject\">Increasingly, leading cities are hiring \u201cdata people.\u201d<\/li>\n<li class=\"suggest\">Leading cities are hiring more \u201cdata people\u201d than ever before.<\/li>\n<li class=\"suggest\">Leading cities are hiring \u201cdata people\u201d in record numbers.<\/li>\n<li class=\"suggest\">More leading cities are hiring &#8220;data people&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Perhaps &#8216;data people&#8217; should be in the lead.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"reject\">Increasingly, leading cities are hiring \u201cdata people.\u201d<\/li>\n<li class=\"suggest\">&#8220;Data people&#8221; are in demand in leading cities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You have so many options. Don&#8217;t use &#8216;increasingly&#8217;, ever. And for sure don&#8217;t use it in a song.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"quo\">Long blends of days<br \/>\nStream into nights<br \/>\nConsciousness barely coping<br \/>\nThe land going by seems level<br \/>\nBut really the tracks are<br \/>\n<span class=\"highlighter\">Increasingly<\/span> sloping.<br \/>\n&#8211; &#8216;Slice of Time&#8217; by <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/3iZfDyeiFYjzUizV1ggP5i\">David Crosby<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Just don&#8217;t.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Don&#8217;t use this word.
